How to Use a Glucometer Machine
Here's a step-by-step guide on how to use a glucometer:
Items you'll need:
- Glucometer:
This is the device that measures your blood sugar levels.
- Test
strips: These are disposable strips that you insert into the glucometer. They contain chemicals that react with your blood and give a
glucose reading.
- Lancing
device: This tool is used to prick your finger to obtain a small blood
sample.
- Lancets:
These are the small, disposable needles that you use with the lancing
device.
- Alcohol
swabs or cotton balls and rubbing alcohol: To clean your hands before
testing.
- Tissue
or a bandage: To stop any bleeding after the test.
Step-by-step guide:
- Wash
your hands:
Start by thoroughly washing your hands with soap and water. Dry them completely using a clean towel. - Prepare
the glucometer:
Insert a fresh test strip into the glucometer according to the manufacturer's instructions. Typically, you'll need to match the strip's direction with the markings on the glucometer. - Prepare
the lancing device:
Load a lancet into the lancing device. Different devices may have slightly different loading mechanisms, so follow the instructions provided with your specific device. - Prick
your finger:
Place the lancing device against the side of your fingertip, usually on the side of the ring or middle finger. Press the button to release the lancet and create a small puncture. - Collect
a blood sample: Allow a small drop of blood to form on your fingertip.
Gently touch the edge of the test strip to the blood drop until the strip
has absorbed enough blood to get a reading. Some meters may require you to
apply the blood to a specific spot on the test strip.
- Wait
for the reading:
The glucometer will take a few seconds to analyze the blood sample and provide a blood glucose reading. This reading will be displayed on the screen. - Dispose
of materials:
Safely discard the used lancet and test strip in a sharps container. Dispose of any other materials used, such as cotton balls or alcohol swabs, properly. - Review
and respond:
Based on your blood glucose reading and any guidance from your healthcare provider, take appropriate action. This may include adjusting your diet, insulin or medication dosage, or contacting your healthcare team.
